Judas Iscariot’s Role in Prophecy

Judas Iscariot’s Role in Prophecy

The role of Judas Iscariot in the events leading to the crucifixion of Jesus is a subject of not only significant theological discussion but historical and prophetic fulfillment. Historically known for betraying Jesus, the threads of Judas’ significance in that betrayal of Jesus began long before Jesus chose him as one of the twelve disciples to spread His Teachings. In this Holiest of Season’s the Celebration of the Resurrection of our Savior and King, Jesus Christ it is a good time to explore this topic and the significance of this individual known as Judas Iscariot.

Historically, Judas lived and traveled with Jesus and the other disciples, participating in many important events. Despite being part of this close-knit group, Judas’s actions ultimately set him apart. He is often viewed as a symbol of betrayal due to his decision to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. As stated in Matthew 26:14-15 (KJV), “Then one of the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, And said unto them, What will ye give me? and I will deliver him unto you.” This act ultimately revealed the seeds of darkness within his heart and disloyalty to Jesus that he had had from the very beginning.

Where did these seeds of darkness come from? This leads to the Prophetic implications of Judas’ role in the coming of Messiah. For this we look to the book of John. Specifically, John 13:1 (ESV) where the Word of God is speaking of Jesus’ great love of not only the disciples but for all who would believe and follow Him. It is in the beautiful section on the Washing of the Disciples Feet during the Passover/Last Supper meal.

John 13:2 (ESV) states “During the supper, when the devil had already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son to betray Him.” Jesus continues to teach, minister, love and reveal what was to come as He is washing the disciples feet.

At verse 17 Jesus states “If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled. ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe I am He.”

This profound and prophetically revealing passage leads us to exactly the origins of the dark seed that was in Judas’ heart. The devil, Satan himself put that dark seed into the willing vessel of Judas to be his/Satan’s instrument, to bruise the heel of Jesus Christ the Messiah.

The origins of this prophecy can be found in the Book of Genesis 3:15 (ESV) after Satan tempted Adam and Eve. Almighty GOD pronounced His sentence and wrath upon Satan within the very first prophecy of the Coming of Messiah to rectify it all. “I (GOD) will put enmity between you (Satan) and the woman, and between your (Satan) seed and her Seed (Messiah): He (Messiah) will crush your head and you shall bruise His heel.”

God’s Holy Word and Prophecy will be fulfilled! Satan used Judas. GOD Almighty used Satan himself and his using Judas. GOD Almighty knew the choices Satan would make and the ones Judas would make as well. As we are told in Isaiah 46:9-10 (ESV), “for I am GOD, and there is no other; I am GOD, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done.”

The Genesis 3:15 prophecy and sentence upon Satan and his willing vessel Judas to fulfill it, initiated a series of events that culminated in the crucifixion of Jesus on the Cross at Calvary. A moment that exemplifies profound love and unimaginable sacrifice, His then subsequent burial, and Resurrection from the grave overcoming death and CRUSHING Satan’s head giving us Salvation and Eternal Life for those who will Believe upon Him.

Thus, while Judas’s actions were pivotal in fulfilling God’s plan for salvation through Christ’s sacrifice, they also underscore a deeper narrative about love and divine purpose. This unending gracious love was not only active prior during Jesus’ ministry, life, crucifixion, death, resurrection and ultimate ascension to the Right Hand of God the Father, He left us with an amazing gift and eternal seal of His presence with us forever, His Holy Spirit.

In the Gospel of John 16:7 (KJV), He states, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you

So during this Holiest of Seasons, celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior we also can celebrate and Thank God the Father for the Holy Spirit dwelling within us that is greater than he who is in the world. Amen!

God Bless and Keep You.
